After a long, stressful day at work, everyone’s favorite place to be is in their own bed, snuggled up with their favorite book or TV series. Our bed is our sanctuary and best place to go to escape the burdens of our everyday lives. With that in mind, it is important to keep this place clean and fresh. We make sure to wash our sheets and comforters often, but have you thought about your pillows? Our pillows can contain dirt and bacteria that are harmful to our health, so washing your pillows regularly is something that should be done. Here at Landry Zone, we have some tips on how to wash your pillows and get ready for a great night’s sleep:
Check the tags:
Whether they’re down or synthetic, most pillows can be washed in the washing machine, but you should double check by reading the tags. If you’re good to go, remove any cases and wash them separately. If you’ve already ripped the tags off, it’s safe to stick with warm water & the gentle or delicate cycle.
Let them soak:
If your pillows are a bit discolored from overuse, and possible sweat stains, you can soak them in a solution of 1 cup of laundry detergent, 1 cup of powder dishwasher detergent, ½ cup or baking soda, & 1 cup of bleach. Grab a big tub and fill it with hot water. Add the materials and let your pillows soak for at least an hour before washing.
Load the washer:
It’s a good idea to wash two pillows at a time to balance out the washer during the spin cycle. Front loading washers are ideal for this project, but if the only washer available to you is the top-loading kind, be sure to put the pillows in vertically to prevent the pillows from being damaged by or getting wrapped around the agitator.
Time to dry:
Now that your pillows are all clean, you can put them in the dryer. Tumble dry your pillows on low heat and take them out every so often to fluff them up. You can even add a few dryer balls or tennis balls to assure maximum fluffiness. Replace your clean pillowcases and enjoy!
Once this process is complete, your pillows should look and smell brand new! Repeat this process regularly to ensure cleanliness and to eliminate bacteria.
